How Spanish numbers work

0 to 15 are single words you learn by heart. 16 to 29 are written as one word (dieciséis, veintidós). From 31 on you join tens and units with “y”: treinta y uno, noventa y nueve. “Y” only ever sits between the tens and the units, never after cien or mil: ciento cinco, mil dos.

100 on its own is “cien”, but 101 to 199 start with “ciento”. 500, 700 and 900 are irregular: quinientos, setecientos, novecientos. Hundreds agree with feminine nouns: doscientas personas, quinientas manzanas.

“Uno” becomes “un” before a masculine noun and before mil or millones: un euro, veintiún años, treinta y un mil. Before a feminine noun it is “una”: una manzana, veintiuna personas. “Mil” never takes “un” and never becomes plural: mil, dos mil, diez mil.

Writing numbers with digits in Spain

Spain uses a comma for decimals and a dot or a thin space for thousands: 3,50 € is three euros fifty, 1.500 is one thousand five hundred. Mexico and the US-influenced countries often use the English style (1,500.50). The converter accepts both.

How to say any number in Spanish

  1. Split the number. Split it into millions, thousands and the last three digits, as you would write it: 21.375 → 21 | 375.
  2. Say each group. Say each group from 1 to 999: veintiún, trescientos setenta y cinco. Use “y” only between tens and units.
  3. Add mil or millones. Put “mil” after the thousands group and “millones” after the millions group: veintiún mil trescientos setenta y cinco.
  4. Match the noun. Before a masculine noun “uno” becomes “un”; before a feminine noun hundreds and “uno” become feminine: doscientas casas, veintiuna personas.

Questions and answers

How do you say 21 in Spanish?

21 is “veintiuno”. Before a masculine noun it shortens to “veintiún” (veintiún euros) and before a feminine one it becomes “veintiuna” (veintiuna personas).

Is it “cien” or “ciento”?

Use “cien” for exactly 100 and before mil or millones (cien mil). Use “ciento” for 101 to 199: ciento uno, ciento cincuenta.

1,000 is “mil”, never “un mil”. 2,000 is “dos mil” and 1,500 is “mil quinientos”. “Mil” does not change in the plural.

How do you say a billion in Spanish?

An English billion (1,000,000,000) is “mil millones”. The Spanish word “billón” means a million million (1,000,000,000,000).

How do you read years in Spanish?

As one normal number: 1998 is “mil novecientos noventa y ocho” and 2026 is “dos mil veintiséis”. Spanish does not split years in pairs like English does.
