How Spanish prices sound

A price is read as euros + “con” + cents: 3,50 € is “tres euros con cincuenta”. In a shop people often drop the words: “tres cincuenta” or “tres con cincuenta”. Cents are said as a normal number, so 2,05 € is “dos (euros) con cinco”.

“Un euro” but “veintiún euros”: “uno” becomes “un” before euro. A million euros is “un millón de euros”, with “de”.

Why prices are hard to hear

Pairs like cuarenta / catorce (40 / 14), sesenta / setenta (60 / 70) and doce / dos (12 / 2) blur at speed. The quiz picks prices on purpose that contain them. Replay as often as you like, then turn the slow voice off.

How to understand prices in Spanish

  1. Listen for “con”. “Con” splits euros from cents: “seis con veinte” is 6,20 €.
  2. Catch the euros first. Write the euros as soon as you hear them, then the cents.
  3. Check the tricky pairs. If you heard catorce, ask yourself whether it was cuarenta; sesenta or setenta; dos or doce.
  4. Ask again politely. If you missed it, say “¿Perdón, cuánto es?” or “¿Me lo repite, por favor?”.

Questions and answers

How do you say prices in Spanish?

Say the euros, then “con”, then the cents: 4,75 € is “cuatro euros con setenta y cinco”. In everyday speech many people say just “cuatro setenta y cinco”.

How do you ask how much something costs in Spanish?

Ask “¿Cuánto cuesta?” for one thing and “¿Cuánto cuestan?” for several. To ask for the total, say “¿Cuánto es?”.

Do Spanish people say “céntimos”?

Rarely when paying. “Céntimos” appears on signs and when the price is under one euro: “cincuenta céntimos”. Otherwise people say “dos con cincuenta”.

Is “un euro” or “uno euro” correct?

“Un euro”. “Uno” loses the -o before a masculine noun: un euro, veintiún euros, treinta y un euros.

Is it free?
