Countable and uncountable nouns: a game homework
Shopping for a picnic: make the list with Carmen, buy apples, bread and cheese from Paco, milk and sugar from Marta.
holatown.com/play?learn=en&hw=countable-uncountable
The grammar in 3 lines
- Countable nouns have a plural and take a/an: an apple, two apples, many apples, a few apples.
- Uncountable nouns have no plural and no a/an: milk, bread, sugar, some milk, a little sugar.
- Questions follow the same split: How many apples? How much milk? Some in offers and requests, any in most questions and negatives.
| In the game | Why |
|---|---|
| We need some milk. | milk is uncountable: not “a milk” |
| Can I have a few apples, please? | apples: countable, so a few |
| Just a little sugar, thanks. | sugar: uncountable, so a little |
| Have you got any eggs? | any in a question |
Why a game works for countable and uncountable nouns
The wrong word gets a funny reaction
Ask Carmen for “a milk” and she asks if you want one drop. Students laugh, fix it and remember why.
Real quantities, not a gap-fill
Students build a shopping list and buy it from two shops, which is how the rule is used outside the classroom.
Short, with a fair score
Nine grammar moments and a five-question check. Only first tries count, so the score shows what they really know.
Teacher instructions
- Teach or revise countable and uncountable nouns in class (some, any, much, many, a few, a little). In Life Vision Elementary it goes with Unit 2.
- Send the homework link to the class chat or write it on the board.
- Students open it on a phone or laptop, with no sign-up, type their name and play until the “Homework done” card (5–7 minutes).
- They send you a screenshot of that card: name, score, date and a check code.
- Next lesson: start with two minutes on the “To review” items most students share.

What students send you: A “Homework done ✓” card with the student’s name, the topic, the score (first tries only), stars, the date and time, the time spent, a check code (HT-…) and a “To review” list of their first-try mistakes. You can check a code with the student’s name and score: same name, date and score always give the same code.
For the board: “Play the Hola Town mission at holatown.com/play?learn=en&hw=countable-uncountable and send me a screenshot of the ‘Homework done’ screen.”
