Empadronamiento (town hall registration)
Registering at the town hall where you live. Almost everything builds on it: health card, school, arraigo and nationality.
Who it is for
Everyone who lives in Spain, with or without papers. It is mandatory and does not depend on your immigration status.
Where
Your town hall (ayuntamiento)
Steps
- Open your town hall’s padrón page: it says whether you need an appointment and whether you can do it online.
- Fill in your town hall’s hoja padronal (registration form). Every adult being registered signs it.
- Go with the documents on the list. If the lease is not in your name, bring a signed authorisation from the owner or main tenant.
- Ask for the volante or certificate. For arraigo or nationality ask for the historical certificate (histórico): it shows how long you have lived here.

This app is independent and is not a government service. It explains official procedures in plain words and links the official pages. It is general information, not legal advice: only the law in force when you file applies. For your own case, ask an immigration lawyer or gestor.
