NIE (foreigner identity number)
A personal number for dealing with Spain: buying, signing, inheriting, working. It is a number, not a card and not a residence permit.
Who it is for
If you apply for a residence permit, the NIE is assigned automatically with it. People ask for it separately mostly when they will not reside (buying property, inheritance, business).
Where
Policía Nacional (foreigners office or police station) or a Spanish consulate
Steps
- Check whether you really need it separately: a residence application already gives you one.
- Fill in form EX-15.
- Pay the fee on form 790, code 012, at a bank or online. The amount is on the form itself.
- Book the appointment only on the official site. Appointments are free: nobody may sell you one.
- Go with everything. You get a certificate with your NIE number.
What to bring
Tick what you already have: it is saved in this browser.
Appointments (cita previa)
Appointments are free and only booked on the official site. Nobody may sell you one: paying for an appointment is a scam or a crime.
